Want to stay on a controlled eating pattern (diet)?
Have lots of pre-prepared food around!
Exercise by itself is not enough. I know plenty of muscle-laden cardio powerhouses that are still Fat with a capital F. Check out the offense or defensive lineman at the local high school, college or professional level and you come across many examples of big strong men that can run or tussle all day long and still are covered by a thick lard blanket. Despite an incredible daily caloric expenditure, these athletes still manage to eat way more than they need and end up fat. Those who depend strictly on diet have but one option to achieve their goals: slash calories.
I had a high school friend who weighed 180 and by the time he reached 30 he ballooned to a bulbous 300. One day he called and announced that hed gone on an amazing diet and lost 100 pounds in twelve months. He came into town and I was looking forward to seeing the old boy back in fighting trim. He proudly showed up and before hed gotten both feet though the door he began haranguing me, berating me and pontificating to me about his diet and how Id better realign my fitness thinking. A short fellow, his accent, tone and timbre reminded me of the diminutive warden in Cool Hand Luke, What we have here is a failure to communicate. Trouble was he looked real bad. Somehow, despite going to all the aggravation and deprivation required to shed a hundred pounds, he was still FAT! Hed miniaturized the former 300-pound fat man into a 200-pound mini-fat replica. True he was lighter and healthier and God bless him for the effort but he was nothing youd aspire to look like.
Zero exercise and slashing calories down to starvation levels cause the human body to go catabolic and when that happens the body starts cannibalizing its own muscle tissue in order to feed itself. If the body perceives starvation it flicks a primordial hard-wire switch and when this physiological phenomena occurs muscle tissue moves ahead of stored body fat in the cannibalization lineup. Who amongst us would complain if to get lean and muscular you simply starved until all the body fat meltedwed all starve ourselves down for six weeks or so, dialing in the desired level of leanness and when we got ripped to our liking, how easy to simply start adding back calories. Unfortunately for us when the body senses starvation it will save body fat at all cost, even if it means ripping down the interior walls of a muscle for the amino content.
Catabolism is the opposite of anabolism, a blessed physiological state wherein the body is rested, fed and ready: when anabolic all that is required is an intense workout of some type or another and BANG! Hypertrophy occurs or body fat oxidation occurs or both! All the preconditions necessary for muscle growth or fat melting are present and accounted for when anabolic.
My pal had basically duplicated the caloric deprivation of a prison camp and successfully starved off body weight. Hed used Iron Will to impose catabolism for months on end and the end result was he looked haggard and old with jowls like a bloodhound - yet he wanted to lecture me on the obvious effectiveness of his system. The only thing worse than starvation is starvation compounded by hard labor; that really intensifies catabolism call it catabolism cubed.
Starvation and lots of mindless exercise is the prescription used by the TV personal trainers on the reality shows. Have you noticed that at the end of the reality TV shows involving weight loss (The Biggest Loser, Celebrity Fit Club, Made, etc.) the winner looks nearly as fat and shapeless as they did before they began the contest? Plus the stuff they put these out-of-shape folks through is not only counterproductive but downright cruel: make the 400-pound person jog for miles, run up steep steps, yell at them and through fear and intimidation and greed make them work way too hard. Afterwards they under-feed themits a prescription for disaster. Im waiting for the first celeb to keel over and die the relatives sue the whole concept right out of existence.
How would I handle the scenario? I start the process with a little bit of exercise initially, not too much, allow the body to acclimatize to ever-increasing training volumes and intensitiesbut gradually! Clean up the food selections immediately but make sure enough calories are consumed to support the exercise. I would feed the obese person often but limit food selections to a purposefully primitive menu heavy on fibrous carbs and lean protein. The goal would be to get them anabolic though small frequent feedings and keep them there. Train them hard - but not recklessly - using short, intense sessions. I would never ever have them engage in any high impact aerobics and as readers know, I avoid cardio machines as if they were infected with plague. One secret to successfully melding exercise with eating is learning how to prepare really fine tasting food that also happens to be really good for you.
If you eagerly look forward to eating diet foods than dieting no longer is drudgery. When you discover how to put the taste back into diet foods, dieting morphs from an act of willpower into an act of unadulterated enthusiasm. When that happens you are on the expressway to transformation. It is one thing to be able to prepare a great tasting diet meal and it is quite another to be able to prepare enough great tasting diet food to last for the coming week. The idea is to have food available and ready to micro into life, all week long. The best way to avoid binging is to never become hungry. Do you know how to cook 4-7 days worth of food at one time? Ill jump into the specifics tomorrow.
