Who's gonna win "The Ultimate Fighter" this year? I'm thinking Joe for the little guys, and Seth for the big guys.

I'm having a hard time getting a feel for this outfit - by this time last year I had picked out kupchek (I saw him get beat last night after dominating for the entire fight) and the big howdy dowdy red head - seems like no one is really standing out this year...

I have a question about squats. I'm rehabbing a broken ankle and have to start back at square one. I can't do squats with anything more than body weight and have been doing them with a ball between my back and the wall. It's great for balance assist, and I do get sore afterwards in the quads, but is this a legit weight training exercise or just for PT?
Marty Gallagher replies on 10-04-2005 at 12:56:25:
Okay - here a question at the wire - I think those ball squats are a great idea - are you getting a thigh burn? I have new trainees work up to 50 or 100 reps in the free-weight squat before I let them squat with weight - why not try and build up your weightless squat to first 30 then 50 then 100 reps - really go low and stay flat footed throughout...write back once you can hit 100 - this is a great way to build some super technique...

Hey Marty,
Yea, on the bench I hit 5 triples with 365 touch and go on Saturday.....
Am planning on doing some paused singles (365 then 385 then 390) on Wednesday (tomorrow) and then more paused singles on Sunday and then dropping the benching till the meet.... Does that sound good ?
Marty Gallagher replies on 10-04-2005 at 12:45:49:
wow - that's strong - do you really need the wednesday session? why not go in on saturday and do your singles? I think three sessions in seven days is a little much and would consider either dropping one sessio or only going to your opener in one session if you prefer to train twice....also - on saturday, use your exact warmups you plan to use in the competition - one alternative might be
1. wednesday - exact warmups then work to opener
2. saturday - exact warmup then go to opener and max
No Name
I gotta ask, I'm sure your response will get me fired for laughing too loud...
What are you going to be for Halloween?
Marty Gallagher replies on 10-04-2005 at 12:41:33:
I scare the hell out of the little kids just answering the door as myself...I can make 'em cry just by raising my voice...I had over three hundred kids come to my door last year - serious - they really take halloween serious out in the country and we go through forty bucks of candy in three hours...

Yes, Marty, your blurb about o-lifters and power lifters is there.
I meant to say I'm hoping they'll admit a woman to their club. Whether or not they're true primitives as in raw, I know what I'm looking to learn -- good form. I don't plan on squeezing into any of that gear!
Marty Gallagher replies on 10-04-2005 at 12:43:59:
don't buy into their 'gear is safer' arguments - that's a laugher that they use like gospel - I suppose its safer to wear gear when you're handling 40% more weight than your actually capable of...

I think you are thinking of 99 Luftballoons by Nena, because ? and the Mysterians had "96 Tears" You forgot Love featuring Arthur Lee, The Standells (Dirty Water), The Count Five (Psychotic Reaction)and of course the Leaves doing their manic, tuneless version of "Hey Joe"
Marty Gallagher replies on 10-04-2005 at 12:51:08:
I'll give you Dirty Water by the standells - the original inspiration for that other boston rock band and psychotic reaction was great - how about 'fire' by the Crazy World of Arthur Brown or I put a spell on you by screaming Jay - I always liked that English Garage band that did 'not fadeaway' and heart of stone - I forget their name...

I'm currently delving deep into the world of the 60's Garage rock, so I'll ask you, what are some of your favorites of the genre? I'm digging "You're Gonna Miss Me" by the Thirteenth Floor Elevators and ""Double Shot (of my Baby's Love)" by the Swingin' Medallions among others.
Marty Gallagher replies on 10-04-2005 at 12:28:23:
no, no, no you're all wet on your selections - that's not real garage rock - liar, liar by the castaways, 99 tear by question mark and the mysterions, louie/louie by the kingsmen, wild thing by the troggs, big bottom by spinal tap - authentic stuff, not that made up imitation stuff you've been fooled into liking....

I'm doing very well Marty. I posted a "quarterly review" in my training log, and I'll email that to you so you don't have to scroll to find it. Next month I'm contacting a local tribe of primitives (power lifters!!) to see if they won't admit a me to their club.
Marty Gallagher replies on 10-04-2005 at 12:31:52:
make sure there raw and not mumified - did my blurb about O-lifters and P-lifters appear today?

Marty,
I happened to see a commerical promo for your show last night-it several obese, out of shape people doing simple cardio and weights and looking like it was killing then....then I realized I was actually watching Ultimate Fighter 2
Hey, I think you should have some heavy semi-celebrity on your show
take care

Oh that's funny - one of the doughy fellows got whipped last night by a very in shape 220-pounder - it was interesting as they said the guy eliminated (6-foot-7) had beaten the gigantical Bob Sapp in a MMA fight - promoters were doing everything in their power to promote a multi-million dollar fight between sapp and down-on-his-luck mike tyson - but sapp got whipped by kemo (though they got him the win with a little chicanary) then the UFC fellow last night apparently upset that gravy train...
Diet Question
Hi Marty,
Male, 37yo, fit. I am currently leaning out and am only cutting calories by a few hundred per day, but have upped the cardio a lot, and really cleaned up the diet. I am on the whole fibrous card, starchy carb (b rice, sweet potato), lean meat diet. The problem is there are not many calories in really clean food. Any suggestions on upping the calorie load without having to eat a tractor trailer load of food each day?
Marty Gallagher replies on 10-04-2005 at 12:36:11:
protein powder and sports nutrition bars are a godsend - try eating three square meals, one power snack and don't forget the famous oatmeal/protein powder gruel bomb -
place a couple servings of oatmeal in a tuppeware container, add water and microwave for a couple minutes until the oatmeal and water are mixed, melded and cooked...now dump in one or two servings of protein power and mix it in - you might need to add a little more water - eat this sludge with a spoon - dense, powerpacked and perfect nutrition...if I'm in a rush I'll throw the oatmeal, water and protein powder in a blender, blend it and drink it...

Marty, last month you gave us a refresher course on squats. Do you plan on doing the same for bench presses and deadlifts?
Marty Gallagher replies on 10-04-2005 at 12:15:00:
see this is the great thing about this forum - SURE - I will 'pick apart' both in my daily blogs...I will get to each within the next few weeks - might start later this week on one...how are you doing and how is the training going? I assume you got something out of the squat treatsie? I actually wrote that to help the new show recruits and meant to follow up with the other lifts before carzy event took over....

Hi Marty,
Are you still going to the October meet in Richmond? Do you know if Pavel is going to be there too? I know he's working on a manuscript and is under a tight deadline.
Marty Gallagher replies on 10-04-2005 at 12:18:07:
He will be there - then he is coming back to spend a few days with me here in the mountains soaking up some of our Ural-like vibe and kicking back - I make him laugh and we have a great time: he eats like a horse and I keep throwing dead things on the grill until he crys uncle vanya...I have a few beers and start telling him Irish sanachie tall tales...he is quite well read and we talk Tolstoy and Turgenev - he loves the laid back country lifestyle and I think it reminds him a bit of the motherland...

Hey Marty, how's the TV show coming? Find any people to transform?
Marty Gallagher replies on 10-04-2005 at 12:10:28:
lots - whittled it down to a half dozen - had the first camera shoot sunday and it was a nut house...a half dozen participants, camera and sound people...stacy, Julie (karwoski's significant other) Dr J, Kirk myself...the shoot lasted NINE hours...and was a enduro...lifting, interviews, outdoor cardio, feeding every one, medical stats..,cameras show up on sunday - I weight trained 5 of 6 this morning and will get to the other person this afternoon...cardio everyday - actually I feel real good about who we selected. Now we need to make it happen...

Is it just me or does the crop of contestants on the new season of the Ultimate Fighter seem grossly underprepared for their chosen sport? I couldn't believe how out of shape and unwilling/unable to fight some of these clowns are!!
Marty Gallagher replies on 10-04-2005 at 12:02:36:
Yes - I actually stayed up late last night and thought the same thing - the boring fights are hurting ratings and this is something they cannot minipulate...the whole thing seems a little stale...of course not as stale as the motorcycle shows: I can't remember the last time I watched Orange county choppers or monster garage...how many bikes can you watch being built or golf carts turned into hot dog carts before you get bored.

Hey Marty,
Just wanted to see if you had any ideas about whether I should just recover on the deadlifts (back) from now to the meet - 12 days out - or do 1 more session. I don't seem to get sore anymore but with the frequent sessions, I don't know that I am giving the back time enough to heal for the next time.....
I DL'd the 3 singles of 445 on Wednesday last week. Then Monday (last night) I was scheduled to do 2 singles with 455 but with it being close I modified it slightly. I did the warmups (10,135, 5x185, 3x225, 2x275, 1x315, 1x365, 1x405) and then missed one with 455 (lack of passion and psych or maybe too big a jump ???)...... so , I settled down, rested 3-5 minutes and this time got psyched enough to do a good one at 455 and then added weight to make it 465 and pulled that too ! SO, I got the 465 single........ I was thinking maybe I could do another DL session on Friday and then rest for 9 days before the meet .... What do you think ? Should I attempt 475 on Friday maybe ???
Also, bodyweight is 245.5 today so I am looking good on that - well, not "looking" good but am on schedule with the weight ... Ha !
Thanks for any suggestions !
Marty Gallagher replies on 10-04-2005 at 12:07:10:
You are ready - it's done - that's it - no mas - finito - rest and recover, relax and get strong - really surprised that you could miss 455 then come back and make it and more...very unusual and surprising...great job and congrats on a really good DL cycle - bench press? we want to squeeze in another session

Hey Marty,
Well, today I'll be "Beholding the Mighty Lifting Strap" for the first time. Using it to improve my deadlifting tonnage. I printed out the tutorial from your blog.
Anything else I need to know about these things before I start? I assume you can do alternating grips w/ them (of course, why would you want to?).
Marty Gallagher replies on 10-04-2005 at 12:33:37:
actually using straps you can go with double overhand - after all with straps the grip is no longer an issue - you can use over/under if you like...five rep sets rule - start modestly, get the lay of the land then each week add 10-pounds - in six weeks you'll be handling 60 more pounds....
