“I’m not here to talk about the past.”

Im not here to talk about the past. Better than Comedy Central; the House Government Reform committee panel hearing on steroids was on yesterday and I watched as I had a St. Pats Day beer. (or six) Mark McGwire was patheticLike a demented Mafioso Don called before the Senate he kept saying, Im not here to talk about the past.

Lets set the table differently if you, the reader of this column, were to be accused of say sexually molesting a child, how would you react? With fury, indignation and shock? You bet. Would you demand a lie detector test? You bet. Would you rise out of your chair and say, How damn dare you sir have you no shame? Would you, being accused of such a heinous crime, have to first wheel to your $500 an hour lawyer and confer before leaning into the microphone and saying, Im not here to talk about the past.

Heres the deal: when multiple millions of bucks are on the line, and the difference between 1st and 7th place is infinitesimal, athletes will take steroids. Sorry to put it so bluntly, sorry to puncture so many hero-balloons, but take a reality check: athletes will take drugs to gain an edge over competitors in sports where no money is on the line. Throw millions into the deal and what do you think? Baseball wants to make the 1st offense for getting caught a ten day suspension this in a sport where the average salary is slightly over $2,000,000 per year. Patheticcmon folks lets get serious!

How about a two year suspension and some serious out-of-competition testing? The IOC (International Olympic Committee) bans 1st offenders for two years and 2nd offenders are banned for life. Plus baseball is such a rich sport and the player pool so small (relatively speaking) that out-of-competition testing the real method to rid the sport of drugs would be a snap. So why the foot dragging? I realize determining who took gas in the past is a he said she said but here is a question: if Canseco is so much the liar, where are the lawsuits for defamation of character? Where are the demands to take a lie detection test?

Here is a blurb from one of my fitness heretic buddies Scott Sonnon. Scott is a Sambo national champion, national team coach and one of the best young guns in the fitness game. Fluent in Russian, Sonnon lived in Russia for four years honing his Sambo martial arts skills. We correspond regularly and he sent me a blurb of his current training regimen that I felt would be of interest to my readers. I have a Big Tent theory about fitness and tend towards inclusive as opposed to exclusive provided the fitness guru in question passes the smell test Scott definitely passes. He is the ideal combination of brains and athletic credibility you look for in a genuine fitness expert. Check it out:

Here’s what my daily routine has been comprised of:

3 rounds of the following circuit (with 1 minute rest in between):

1. Top Circles: reps 21 both directions, both shoulders; to compensate for any building density
2. Hang Snatches: reps 8 each; increasing in weight (alternating arms)
3. Bent Presses: reps 5/5 for dynamic flexibility;
4. Circular dips: 13 reps each round

5-10 minute rest…

3 rounds of the following circuit (with 1 minute rest in between):

1. 34 hand bridge pressups
2. 8 parallette hand stand pressups
3. 8 planche pressups
4. 16 (8R/8L) leg swoops

Finish it off with 20 minutes in the dry sauna, cold contrast shower, and 20 minutes in the whirlpool.
Here’s my 3 week update: FEB23 - MAR15

This circuit has really been kicking my ass, but it’s good fight specific work. Although my trunk has gotten sizably thicker from all the work (I’m drifting between 197 and 201lbs day to day), it’s my conditioning that’s most important now.

If you’d like to follow along my daily progress, my current personal training blog can be found here .
