Like falling down an elevator shaft and landing in a pool full of mermaids.
*Hunter S. Thompson was once important. I read his book, The Hells Angels, A Strange and Terrible Saga when I was an impressionable teen and for the next decade I was hooked on his manic musings. Fear and Loathing is still funny as hell and his crazed stream of consciousness writing style had a liberating effect on young writers worldwide. He was to me, the literary equivalent of a great garage band that hit it big. He wasnt an all-time virtuoso like Hendrix, Gould, Coltrane or Bird; he was akin to a literary Nirvana. And like the great rock and roll burnouts, that which opened his brain and allowed him to get outside his box, drugs and booze, eventually took his talent. At the end he was a pale shell of the vibrant outlaw of his younger days. As my one of my favorite (current) fiction writers Nick Tosches put it in his profane/profound In the hand of Dante
Above all, I stole from myself. Words and phrases that enamored me, whether I had come upon them or they had come to me from within, were endlessly repeated, recycled, ridden like horses until they were deadI became a fool of a thief who stole from myself.
Love him or hate him, Doc he had a voice all his own. His checkout was a Samurai-inspired exit made by someone who prefers to burn out rather than fade away; not as a cringing cripple or shuttled off to some ignominious end as a drooling vegetable tucked away in the nursing home. They say he wants to have his ashes placed in one of those multiple-explosion 4th of July skyrockets and exploded overhead in a grand finale in front of friends and relativesgot to like that.
*One of my old readers asked about tricep training and I thought it might be worth passing along
I work my triceps and back on the same day. How many exercises should I be doing for my triceps? I feel like the exercises I’m doing all work the same part of the triceps. I know there are different “heads” to the triceps. What exercises work each part? Happy to see you still helping the little guys get bigger! Thanks!
I typically use three types of tricep exercises in the same workout: a barbell or dumbbell exercise, a cable exercise and dips. Lets get the pain train rolling with 2-sets of each type of tricep exercise for a total of six sets. Reps should range between 6 and 12. I would move triceps to chest day for several reasons: heavy bench presses works the triceps to a significant degree and by placing triceps after chest you maximize the rest days. On the other hand if you worked chest and two days later worked the triceps then hit the chest a day or so later, ad infinitum the triceps are being worked to some degree 2-3 times weekly and never quite getting the total rest they need to recuperate. Chest and triceps go together like ham and eggs, Arnold and Franco, Mick and Keith. After chest, start the tricep training with dips. Dips are the perfect segue as they work the lower chest and the triceps what better way to morph from chest to tris? Two sets to failure in the dips then move to tricep extensions, these can be done either lying or standing. Two sets in the 8-10 rep range. Finish with two sets of cable pushdowns no heaving the get the weight moving and in all tricep exercises LOCK OUT HARD and hold the lockout for 2-full seconds before lowering. On the cable pushdowns make the first set 12-reps. On the second cable pushdown set utilize the same poundage and go to failure, wherever that might be, then immediately drop the pin three plates and rep out once again to failure with zero rest. Drop the pin 3-4 plates and do one final drop-set to failure. Your tris will be crispy fried.
