We had a giant Fitness Day Camp this past Sunday when Alise and Air Force Colonel Ron came in for a visit. Simultaneously Nancy, Adrien from Fitness on the Run and husband Bill shot up from Arlington. The five person group offered me an opportunity to work on my group skills as very, very soon Ill be working with groups in front of TV cameras. I wanted to cram as much as possible into the available time so rather than head for the deep woods as I did with Irish Mike (McMick) on Friday, I had the crew circumnavigate the farm for 50-minutes as expeditiously as possible before hitting the unheated garage out back of the compound for some three-lift ultra-basic progressive resistance training: squat, bench press, deadlift period! Afterwards, we checked our heart rate monitors and the guys had burned 1500-calories plus and everyone was ravenous. I had lunch on the table in 30-minutes flat and the collective crew tore through the chow like true Purposeful Primitives. Alise was kind enough to allow me to print her follow up note

Marty,
The Colonel and I had a great trip out to the Compound this weekend. Trail runs, including the sprint intervals uphill, are so much more entertaining than the concrete jungle. We train hard, so we werent surprised to see our heart rates work about the same as we do running stairs and hills and zigzagging sidewalk routes, but oh, how much better it smells out in the woods and keeping an eye out for roots and maintaining balance on uneven terrain is much more intellectually stimulating than plodding along on a treadmill. Next time we want to hit the fire trails and spook some Marines out at Camp David! What I was really looking forward to was your state-of-the-art iron facility, also known as the garage. This was my second trip into the hallowed square and thankfully my learning curve wasnt so steep this time. Your laser focus on perfect form, extended range of motion and enjoying the WORK is spot on. We appreciated the focus on the 3 core power lifts; when you do your squats, dead lifts and flat bench presses with precision and deadly focus, thats when you see the gains without spending hours and hours on pansy auxiliary lifts. Its knowing where to find the extra little bit of extension, the perfect angle for hip, ankle and shoulder that takes a little extra help from pro. Plus there is nothing like having someone you trust, who isnt ever going to candy coat or try and sell you something, right there to answer your questions, adjust your form and help you find your groove. But, as much as I enjoyed the trails, throwing some iron and the excellent food (come on, whats in that chicken — crack?) standing in your kitchen and going step-by-step through my program, helping me adjust my head and my goals, was worth its weight in gold. When youve got the motivation and the dedication sometimes you need a little push where the knowledge gap is holding you back. Whenever I talk about you, (ask Rob about the incessant Marty says) what it always comes down to is how willing you are to help ANYONE, regardless of fitness level, without ever patronizing or making anyone feel like they cant do it or arent worth it. Quite the contrary. No one could come away from a play day with you without feeling like they can accomplish whatever the fitness goal is and most importantly, that theyve got an ace in their corner. Well be back after the next macro-cycle!
