Here is a pretty typical letterreally encouraged by the intelligence, sincerity and the cold (and appropriate) self critical analysis. The first step to real and radical physical transformation starts in the brain of the individual: the second step is determination and discipline coupled with a solid, workable game plan I can provide you that. Were all about trigger transformation and the path has been blazed. In the original Sanskrit the word Guru means, one who points. Not one who leads or one who passes a collection plate or has a bunch of sycophant followers but simply one who points the way and occasionally might tell someone if the tree they are barking up is the wrong one.

Marty, I am reading your articles and stream stuff. Very valuable. Comments on articles. Right target, lots of details for those of us trying to figure this stuff out. I’m the Okinawa guy you told to eat complex carbs, two weight workouts a week and hump the hills/dive to lose weight and tone up. Now have much better cardio fitness, decent strength, but still too flabby. Advice on maintaining strength/minimizing strength loss while trying to shed serious weight? You advised three sets of 12 two or three times a week to a reader earlier this week; same here? Finally, will you name names and models for a heart monitor (s)? Again, thanks for your web site and general wisdom: Amazed the Post cut your column, it was the only plain-language fitness discussion not gummed up by new age glop.

1. As a purposeful primitive always think simple: there are three big checks squares: progressive resistance, cardio, diet/nutrition
2. Make sure you change things around on a periodic basis
3. My advice is never cookie cutter as everyone is different 2-3 sets of 12-reps could be perfectly appropriate assuming this is in heavy contrast to what youve been doing. One the other hand if youve been doing 2-3 sets of 10 reps, jumping to 12 is too similar to what youve been doing. When looking to shake things up CONTRAST is key weather were talking lifting, aerobics or eating (yes eating we need as much periodic contrast in our approach to eating as we do in exercise)
4. I use Polar heart rate monitors and have several that were graciously provided gratis a few years back. The M52 counts calories more often them not I simply power walk until I have burned a predetermined number of calories. Say 500 to 750.
5. It was time to move on had the Post and I not parted company I never would have started this site.

One more thought on gurus, Jiddu Krishnamurti is my man, The Awakening of Intelligence is his masterwork and I consider him my psychological guru. Anyway he tells the piquant story on how once he and three other leading Indian Guru were being driven in an open car over Indian back roads, We were having a heated discussion about awareness and alertness; our driver ran over a goat and no one noticed.

A bumblebee is faster than a John Deere tractor. My good bud Power John forwarded this Purposefully Primitive credo that I had to pass along

COWBOY WISDOM
*Don’t name a pig you plan to eat.
*Country fences need to be horse high, pig tight, and bull strong.
*Life is not about how fast you run, or how high you climb, but how well you bounce.
*Keep skunks and bankers at a distance.
*Life is simpler when you plough around the stump.
*A bumble bee is faster than a John Deere tractor.
*Words that soak into your ears are whispered, not yelled.
*Meanness don’t happen overnight.
*Forgive your enemies. It messes with their heads.
*Don’t sell your mule to buy a plough.
*Don’t corner something meaner than you.
*It don’t take a very big person to carry a grudge.
*You can’t unsay a cruel thing.
*Every path has some puddles.
*When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty.
*The best sermons are lived, not preached.
*Most of the stuff people worry about never happens.
*Don’t squat with your spurs on.
*Don’t judge people by their relatives.
*Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
*Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you’ll enjoy it a second time.
*Don’t interfere with something that ain’t botherin’ you none.
*Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance.
*It’s better to be a has-been than a never-was.
*The easiest way to eat crow is while it’s still warm. The colder it gets, the harder it is to swaller.
*If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin’.
*If it don’t seem like it’s worth the effort, it probably ain’t.
*It don’t take a genius to spot a goat in a flock of sheep.
*Sometimes you get and sometimes you get got.
*The biggest troublemaker you’ll probably ever have to deal with watches you shave his face in the mirror.
*If you get to thinkin’ you’re a person of some influence, try orderin’ somebody else’s dog around.
*Don’t worry about bitin’ off more’n you can chew; your mouth is probably a whole lot bigger’n you think.
*Only cows know why they stampede.
*Always drink upstream from the herd.
*If you’re ridin’ ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it’s still there with ya.
*Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment.
*Lettin’ the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin’ it back in.
*You can’t tell how good a man or a watermelon is ’till they get thumped.
*Never miss a good chance to shut up.
