Photo one and two: Behold the mighty lifting straps. Note how the two straps are positioned one to another as they lie on the chair. This is how they should lie as you slip your hands down and under and through the holes. Tighten them around the wrists. The second photo shows how they should appear when viewing them from the palm side. With you arms at your sides the straps should hang down and peak out from your palm between forefinger and thumb. Now were ready to cinch up.
Photo three and four: Place the weak hand on the bar. Allow the strap to go behind the bar. Reach under with your other hand and pull the strap up the other side of the bar. This action will pull your palm down onto the bar. Wrap the strap tight around the bar one or two circles. Now allow the entire palm to cover the strap and wrap the thumb around the bar. This completes the procedure. The strong hand has to conch itself in using prestidigital dexterity. Practice makes this initially cumbersome strong-hand procedure easier.
Photo five: The thumb-less grip strap variation Just the other day we were talking about how to get the arm pull out of bent over rowing with a barbell or dumbbell. The key is to force the latisimus dorsi to pull the poundage towards the body without using the strong muscles of the arms. The arms want desperately to help pull the weight to completion but that is bad for maximum lat stimulation. Here is an old Indian trick: use straps but dont wrap the thumb. What this does is take the main arm activator out of the picture. The thumb is the most powerful of the ten digits and by not wrapping it around the bar you can still pull the poundage to completion but there is NO WAY that you can arm pull the weight without the thumb! You can pull it to completion but without a thumb the lat has to do all the work! Genius Jerry! Gold! I use this grip for lat pulldowns, chins, seated rows and al types of bent-over rows.
